A huge amount of tailoring and dressmaking work exists that never gets marketed as a big business (alterations, small custom orders, repairs), and it’s often the most sustainable place to start if you’re considering turning sewing skill into income.
Alterations are the lowest-risk starting point. Unlike made-from-scratch garments, alterations don’t require you to source and stock fabric, they’re usually quick turnaround, and demand is constant: every dry cleaner, every clothing shop, every household has occasional alteration needs. It’s also the fastest way to build a local reputation before taking on bigger custom orders.
School uniforms are a genuinely underserved niche in a lot of areas. Growing children mean repeat business every year, and parents are often willing to pay for a properly fitted, durable uniform rather than repeatedly replacing an ill-fitting one. It’s steady, predictable work rather than one-off projects.
Specialise before you generalise. A new tailoring business trying to offer everything (bridal, menswear, alterations, costumes) usually struggles to build a reputation in any one area. Choosing one or two specialities to become known for, even early on, tends to bring in better word-of-mouth referrals than being a generalist from day one.
Price for your actual time, not just materials. One of the most common mistakes new tailoring businesses make is undercharging because they’re only accounting for fabric cost, not the hours of skilled labour that go into a well-fitted garment. Price too low early on and it’s genuinely hard to raise prices later without losing the customers you built the business on.
Build relationships with a fabric supplier who knows your work. Once you’re ordering regularly, a supplier who understands what you make can flag new stock that suits your style before it’s gone, help with fabric substitutions when something’s out of stock, and generally save you time you’d otherwise spend hunting for the right fabric yourself.
