Whether you’re a hobbyist wanting to track progress or working toward taking on paid tailoring and dressmaking work, a portfolio of finished projects does more for your growth (and your credibility with future customers) than any single “best” piece.
1. Document process, not just results. A finished garment photo shows the outcome, but progress photos (fabric selection, pattern layout, a fitting stage) show skill and process, which matters far more to a potential client deciding whether to trust you with their own project.
2. Include a range of garment types, not just your favourites. It’s tempting to only showcase the projects that turned out best, but a portfolio that only shows evening dresses, for instance, doesn’t demonstrate you can also handle structured tailoring, childrenswear, or alterations. A narrow portfolio limits the work people think to bring you.
3. Show fabric variety deliberately. Working confidently across silk, structured wool, stretch knits and stiff cottons are genuinely different skill sets. A portfolio that shows range across fabric types signals more versatility than repeated projects in the fabric you’re already most comfortable with.
4. Keep swatches with your project photos. A small swatch of the actual fabric used, alongside the finished photo, helps anyone reviewing your work (including future-you) remember details a photo alone won’t capture: drape, weight, exact colour under natural light.
5. Note what you’d do differently. A short line on what you’d change next time isn’t a weakness to hide. For anyone assessing your work seriously, it demonstrates the kind of honest self-assessment that experienced makers develop over years, not months.
If you’re building toward taking on client work, it’s also worth photographing pieces on an actual body rather than flat or on a hanger wherever possible: fit is much of what a future client is actually evaluating.
