You don’t need a full new wardrobe to feel like you’ve refreshed your look. Sometimes a handful of custom accessories, made from fabric you’ve chosen yourself, does more than an entire new outfit.
A custom fabric belt is one of the easiest first projects: it uses very little fabric, doesn’t need to fit a body shape precisely, and instantly changes the silhouette of a dress or an oversized shirt. The same goes for a simple headwrap or hair tie made from an offcut, a good way to test whether a bold print works for you before committing to a full garment in it.
Bags are a step up in difficulty but worth it: a structured fabric tote in a heavier cotton canvas or denim-weight fabric holds its shape and lasts years, especially with a simple interfacing layer to stop it sagging. If you’re newer to sewing, start with a lined pouch or a simple drawstring bag before attempting anything with a zip or hard base.
For anyone with fabric already sitting unused at home (leftover curtain fabric, an old favourite garment you no longer wear, remnants from a bigger project), accessories are usually the best way to use small quantities without waste. A metre of fabric that isn’t enough for a garment is often exactly enough for two or three accessories.
