Summer in the Free State means heat, harsh sun, and sudden afternoon thunderstorms, which makes fabric choice more than a style question. Here’s what actually works, on you and in your home, through a proper Highveld summer.
For clothing: look for natural fibres and loose weaves. Linen and linen blends breathe far better than polyester in the heat, and they’re forgiving of creasing if you’re not precious about a crisp look all day. Cotton voile and lightweight poplin work well for shirts that need to survive a hot commute. Darker colours absorb more heat, so lighter shades aren’t just about looking summery. They’re genuinely cooler to wear.
For the home: this is peak curtain season for a different reason than winter. Summer light is intense and low-angled in the late afternoon, and a sheer or lightweight curtain that looked fine in winter can suddenly let in a lot of glare and heat. A layered approach (a sheer for daytime privacy and light diffusion, with a heavier block-out layer for the worst afternoon sun) keeps rooms liveable without keeping curtains closed all day.
A few other things worth trying this season: a linen tablecloth instead of vinyl for outdoor entertaining (it wipes down fine and doesn’t stick to bare arms), lightweight cushion covers that are easy to wash after a dusty highveld wind, and swapping heavy winter throws for something in cotton or a cotton-linen blend.
