Autumn in the Free State is a genuine transition season: warm days, cold mornings and evenings, and a wider temperature swing in a single day than most other seasons. That makes fabric choice about flexibility, not just warmth.
Layering fabric matters more than any single “autumn fabric.” A mid-weight cotton shirt under a wool or wool-blend jacket handles the full range of an autumn day better than one heavier fabric worn alone. You can remove a layer as the day warms up rather than being stuck in something too warm by midday or too light by evening.
Wool moves back into the rotation, but not the heaviest weights yet. Save the heaviest winter-weight wools for actual winter; a lighter worsted wool (around 220–260g) is usually the right weight for an autumn jacket or trousers here: enough structure and warmth without being uncomfortable on the still-warm afternoons.
Corduroy and moleskin are underused options. Both hold warmth well without the bulk of heavier winter fabrics, and they’re forgiving fabrics for trousers that will get regular wear through a season with a lot of temperature variation.
Colour can shift earlier than fabric weight needs to. Moving into deeper autumn tones (rust, olive, deep brown, charcoal) is an easy way to signal a seasonal wardrobe shift even in garments still light enough for warmer days.
