Three Steps to Creating the Perfect Suit

A good suit isn’t the result of one clever decision. It’s three separate stages, each done properly, in order. Skipping or rushing any one of them shows up in the final result.

Step one: fabric. This decision locks in everything downstream, so it comes first. Weight, fibre content, weave and colour all need to match how and where the suit will actually be worn. A suit for occasional formal wear can carry a heavier, more structured fabric than one meant for daily office wear in summer heat. Get this stage wrong and no amount of skill in the next two steps fixes it.

Step two: measurement and pattern. This is where the suit becomes yours specifically, rather than a generic shape. Proper measurement covers more than chest and waist: shoulder slope, arm length, posture, and how a person stands and moves all affect how a jacket should be cut for them. This is also the stage where style choices get built in: single or double-breasted, notch or peak lapel, single or double vent.

Step three: fitting. No suit is finished after a single try-on. A proper fitting process involves at least one baste fitting (the suit assembled loosely, before final stitching) so adjustments can still be made without unpicking finished seams. This is the stage most rushed suits skip, and it’s usually the one that decides whether a suit fits “well” or fits “well enough.”

Each of these three steps takes time for a reason, and a suit that’s rushed through any of them tends to show it in exactly the places you notice most: across the shoulders, at the collar, or in how the trousers break over the shoe.
